Gluvna Shimo Hromada

John L. Hare finished his work in the home he loved on July 25, 2017, with his cherished wife of 62 years, Margaret (nee Stephanchick), by his side.

Born on June 13, 1932, John graduated from Lorain High School in the class of 1950B and went on to serve in the U.S. Navy from 1952 through 1955. He fulfilled duty assignments aboard the USS Oak Hill and also participated in the first testing of the hydrogen bomb in 1952; he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal along with the Navy Occupation Medal.

John was employed at U.S. Steel for 10 years and Ford Motor Lorain Assembly Plant for 29 years, retiring from there as a Senior Process Engineer.

John was a dedicated member of the St. Peter Parish (Lorain), and formerly of St. Ladislaus Parish and Holy Trinity Parish, where he and Margaret married on May 7, 1955.

A self-taught, highly-skilled wood worker, John designed and created many finely-crafted projects and pieces of furniture for family and friends. In addition to “creating sawdust” (as he would say), John played walleyball weekly, competing with men two generations younger.

John was a World War II expert and avidly read historical treatises of virtually every aspect of the war.

As would behoove an ardent reader, John loved wordplay of all kinds – crossword puzzles, unusual words and really bad puns. Sdrawkcab daer neve dluoc eh (He could even read backwards).

Most of all, though, John was devoted to his wife and family, spending time, cooking out and sharing vacations on the beach.

John is survived by his beloved wife Margaret; daughters Linda McVey (Dr. Brett) of Lorain, Karen Fleming (Kirby) of Amherst, Janet Hare of Pickerington, and son Robert Hare (Lynn) of Virginia Beach, VA;  grandchildren  Shannon Post (Brandon), Dr. Courtney Hrdlicka (Dr. Jim), Jaclyn Suarez, Caitlin Fleming, John R. Hare; great-grandaughter Cecilia Lee Post; and sister, Dorothy Thomas.

John was preceded in death by brother Ernest Hare and parents Louis and Mary Hare.
