Gluvna Shimo Hromada

Eileen (nee Anderson) Perusek died at the Montefiore rehabilitation center in Beachwood, Ohio, on Sunday October 1, following an illness of several months.

A life-long resident of Lorain, she was a 1943 graduate of St. Mary High School and a 1978 graduate of Lorain County Community College where, despite having enrolled with uncertainty at age 50, she earned a nearly perfect total grade point average in her Arts and Sciences course of study. She even had to learn how to drive in order to attend LCCC, but her years there were among the best and happiest of her life.

Born August 27, 1925 to David and Nora Anderson, Eileen grew up with a love of reading and books, briefly co-owned a used bookstore, served for several years on the board of the Pelee Island Public Library, and remained a voracious reader and frequent library visitor until her recent illness. She also published articles in Mother Earth News, Tri-State Trader, the KSKJ (Slovenian-American) newspaper and, for years entertained readers of her church's newsletter and later, of the Pelee Island Grapevine, with articles that drew on her considerable knowledge of places, history, folklore, holiday traditions and, most of all, Christmas celebrations and customs from around the world.

Her children and grandchildren especially enjoyed her private recitations of poems, from short to epic that included, as recently as five weeks ago, a flawless rendition of ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas. She also won several prizes at the Lorain County Fair for such things as her postcard and bookmark collections, her chili sauce and once, a first place, for her granola recipe.

She served in earlier years as a volunteer Girl Scout leader and Girl Scout cookie chairwoman and, over the many years of her life, came to be viewed as a mother figure and source of support by many. In later years she and her husband, Ted, were able to visit her grandmother's homeland of Ireland and his parents home places (and relatives) in Slovenia.

Eileen is survived by her sons, Charles Perusek of Lorain, David Perusek Ph.D., of Ashtabula, and; daughter, Anne Perusek (Jim MacDowell) of Cleveland Heights; five grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ted, her son, Theodore (Ted), her parents, David and Nora Anderson, brothers James and David Anderson, Ph.D., and her sister, Kathleen Keiswetter.
