Gluvna Shimo Hromada

Helen R. Czarney (nee Kaminski), age 98, passed away peacefully at her home with her family at her side on the morning of Sunday December 24, 2017. Born in Lorain on May 22, 1919, Helen had been a life-long resident of Lorain County.

She was a 1932 graduate of Nativity BVM School and a 1936 graduate of Lorain High School.

A parishioner of Nativity BVM Catholic Church in Lorain, she was also a member of its Altar & Rosary Society. Helen formerly served as the sacristan there as well.

She began her working career with the National Youth Administration (Neighborhood House). She was later employed by the American Red Cross, by both the Lorain and Columbus offices of the Ohio Bureau of Employment Services, and as a secretary at the former Thew Shovel Company. She retired as secretary for the Nativity BVM Parish School.

Survivors include daughter Mary McNair (the late Thomas) of Elyria, Thomas (Mary Ann) Czarney of Avon, Bernie (Paulette) Czarney of Ocoee, Florida, Jim (the late Ann Marie) Czarney, and Paul (Elaine) Czarney both residing in Lorain, Michael (Cathy) Czarney of Vermilion, and Joe Czarney of Amherst, fifteen grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, two great great granddaughters, and sister Margaret Sweeney of Avon.

Helen was preceded in death by her husband Michael M. Czarney (whom she married on May 16, 1942) in 1998,  parents Michael and Josephine (nee Thomas) Kaminski, and by her sisters Dorothy Barlis and Theresa Kaminski..

Funeral Schedule

Visitation will be Thursday from 3:00 until 7:00 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel – 3224 Broadway Avenue, Lorain. Funeral services will be Friday beginning at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10:00 a.m. in Nativity BVM Catholic Church – 1454 Lexington Avenue.  Reverend Theodore Marszal will serve as main celebrant with Reverend Kenneth Katricak serving as concelebrant. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
