Andrew N. Hanko, Sr, 96, of Avon, died Tuesday December 26, 2017 at St. Mary of the Woods in Avon after a sudden illness.

He was born March 1, 1921 in Sheffield Village and had been a lifelong area resident.

Andy served with the US Army during World War II in Central Europe and the Rhineland.  He was awarded the EAME Theater Ribbon with 2 Bronze Stars, WWII Victory Medal & Good Conduct Medal.

Andy and his wife Pat co-owned and operated Hanko’s Gin Mill in Elyria Township from 1964 to 2007.  As a youth, Andy delivered milk for his father at Hanko Dairy.  He had also worked at National Tube in Lorain for 9 years.  He and his wife Pat also served as stewards at St. Lad’s Club in Lorain from 1959-1964.

Andy was a member of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Avon and a member of the former St. Ladislaus Catholic Church in Lorain.  He enjoyed collecting coins, traveling to Las Vegas and Atlantic City, attending Cleveland Indians games and raising exotic birds.  At one time, several of his ducks escaped their pens and blocked the roads near his home causing a traffic delay and earning him the nickname “Mild Mannered Duck Farmer of Avon”.

He is survived by his children: Andrew Hanko, Jr (Barbara), Anne Marie Luczkowski (Frank), Paulette Resar (Ted), Bert Hanko (Deborah) and Joseph Hanko (Christine); grandchildren:  Amanda Hanko-Wilt (Jeremy), Erica Hanko, Jaclyn Boyle, Teresa Moore (Kevin), Sarah Stone (Michael), Kimberly Hanko-Dale (Jonathon), Patrick Hammonds, Nicholas Hanko (Brandy) & Calvin Lee (Tara); great grandchildren: Kasey Moore, Cameron Moore, Jase Wilt and Hailey Hanko.  He was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years Patricia A. “Pat” Hanko (nee Reising) on March 24, 2016, parents Alex and Anna Hanko (nee Pasztor), brothers Bert, Alex and Michael Hanko and sisters Anna Giran and Margaret Bodnar.

Funeral Schedule

The family will receive friends Thursday December 28th from 4:00-8:00 pm at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave, Lorain.   Additional viewing will be held Friday December 29th from 9:30 am until the time of the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am at St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Church, 2640 Stoney Ridge Rd, Avon.  The Rev C Thomas Cleaton, pastor of St Mary of the Immaculate Conception Church and the Rev James Schmitz, pastor of St. Leo the Great Catholic Church in Cleveland, will concelebrate.  Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Lorain where AMVETS Post #32 Honor Guard will conduct military honors.
