Don W. Karpinski, 95, of Lorain, passed away Tuesday January 9, 2018 at the Ohio Veterans Home in Sandusky after a short illness.

Don was a proud and patriotic member of the greatest generation and honored our country by flying our flag daily at his home.  After high school, he enlisted in the Civilian Conservation Corps and joined the US Navy the following year serving in World War II.  He served on several Navy ships, the Atlantic as a gunner and convoy duty on Liberty ships.  He participated in Normandy beach delivering medical supplies.  As a member of the US Navy Armed Guard, he was part of the Murmansk Run in Russia and was presented with the Medal of Ushakov at the 50-year anniversary by the Russian Embassy.  Upon his discharge, he was presented with the Good Conduct Medal and EAME Medal.

Don retired after 42 years as a security guard at US Steel in Lorain where his congenial personality greeted the vast workforce each day.  Proud of his Polish heritage, he was a member of the United Polish Club, Polish American Citizens Club and PLAV Chapter #38 where he was Vice Commander.  He was a lifelong parishioner of Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church in Lorain and the church Holy Name Society.

A sports enthusiast, he was a devoted Cleveland Indians fan and enjoyed watching the Cleveland Browns and Ohio State Buckeyes.  Throughout his life, he participated in golf and bowling leagues and for many years spent each morning swimming at the YMCA.  He also enjoyed gardening, doing various creative projects and spending time with his family.

He is survived by his son Dave Karpinski (Janet) of Amherst, daughter-in-law Marlene Karpinski of Lorain, grandchildren: Kelly Pellitieri (Dominic) of Avon, Andrea Smiley (Grant) of Lawrenceburg, Indiana, Aryn Kosmidis (Alex) of Lakewood, Kyle Karpinski (Katey) of Lakewood and Allison Safran (Eric) of Anderson, South Carolina; 9 great grandchildren and sister Pat Pikora of Lorain.  He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years Dorothy Karpinski (nee Mahnic) on August 20, 2016, son Don Karpinski on August 4, 2017, parents Margaret Karpinski-Pikora (nee Flaczynski) and William Karpinski; stepfather John Pikora, brothers Anthony Karpinski, John Karpinski and Al Pikora and sister Josephine Marks.

Don’s family wishes to extend their sincere gratitude for the care and support given to him by the staff at the Ohio Veterans Home and Stein Hospice.  Their genuine compassion and thoughtfulness is to be commended.
