Gluvna Shimo Hromada

John “Cho” Chovanec, age 53, of Lorain, passed away on Wednesday March 21, 2018 following complications from a long-term illness. Born in Lorain on January 12, 1965, Cho was a life long resident of the city. He was a graduate of Admiral King High School and went on to serve in the United States Marine Corps following his graduation.

He was most recently employed by National Auto Wrecking and Salvage. Previously, he worked for G Metals in Lorain, as a driver for Browning-Ferris Industries, as a bartender at Scrubby’s Bar, and as a laborer for Paul Shank Home Improvement.

He was a parishioner of the former Holy Trinity Church in Lorain and had served as an altar boy there as a youth.

Cho was a life member of the American Slovak Club; he was an amateur astronomer, an avid NASCAR fan and loyal follower of the late Dale Earnhardt, Sr. Additional interests included travel, fishing, billiards, and playing poker with family. He also enjoyed camping, and especially liked staying at Findlay State Park.

He is survived by sisters Linda Lewyckyj of Vermilion, and Judith A. Chovanec of Lorain, and brother Joseph (Nancy) Chovanec residing in Meridian, Texas. He also leaves a host of nieces and nephews.

Mr. Chovanec was preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Virginia (nee Staveski) Chovanec, sister Mary Lou Shawver, and brothers Thomas and Charles Chovanec.
