Charles Frederick Stohrel passed away on Thursday January 30, 2020 at the age of 99.  After weeks of failing health, he passed away peacefully at St Mary of the Woods in Avon where he was treated with compassion and dignity by all who cared for him.

Charles was born December 14, 1920.  He was the eldest of 9 children born to Frederick Wilhelm Stohrel and Violet Eleanor Stohrel (nee Ooley).  He grew up in Cleveland and moved to Sheffield Lake in 1954 with his wife Rebecca and their children.

He proudly served his country in the US Navy during WWII from 1942-1945 aboard the USS Calvert, USS Charles Carol, USS Andromeda and LSMR 527 Rocket Ship in the British Isle and Europe.  He was awarded 2 Bronze Stars, European/African/Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, Combat Action Ribbon and Navy Unit Commendation.

Charles retired after 35 years as a Meat Cutter for Fisher Foods/Fazios where he brought new meaning to “whistle while your work”.

He enjoyed his many daily walks, reading several newspapers a day and keeping up on current events.  He loved traveling and casino trips with his wife.  Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family.

Charles will be dearly missed by his family and all that knew him, his great sense of humor, fascinating story telling and, most of all, his beautiful smile.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years Rebecca Ann Stohrel (nee Karns) on March 20, 2013, his infant son Charles F. Stohrel Jr and grandson Joseph Byrd.  He is survived by his brother William Stohrel of California, sisters Zelma Kurilich of Brunswick and Helen “Honey” Brown of Willoughby, son Richard (Davida) Stohrel of Sheffield, daughters: Linda (Tom) Chapin of Elyria, Pamela Greene of Randolph and Nancy (Steve) Pawlowski of Amherst; 10 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and 11 great-great grandchildren.

The family would like to send a special thank you to the staff at Mercy New Life Hospice and St Mary of the Woods for not only the great care of their father but for the care given to their family during this difficult time.
