Gluvna Shimo Hromada

George N. Mitcheff, age 91, of Lorain, passed away peacefully at his residence on the afternoon of Tuesday November 3, 2020 while under the care of the Hospice of the Western Reserve. He was born in Lorain on May 28, 1929 and remained a life-long resident of the city.

George was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps and fulfilled duty assignment as a Corporal during the Korean War. He was the recipient of the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Stars, the United Nations Service Medal, and the Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation. He was an active member of the  Lofton Henderson Detachment of the Marine Corps League, as well as VFW Post # 1662 of Amherst and Amvets Post # 47 of Lorain. He was also a member of the Lorain Veterans Council as well as the Military Order of the Devil Dogs.

He was formerly employed as a shipping and receiving specialist at the Freuhauf Trailer Company in Avon Lake as well as American Standard and Fastway Fasteners. George officially retired in 1986.

Extremely proud of his service in the Marine Corps, he established an impressive and extensive collection of military memorabilia that was displayed throughout his home; he also built numerous panoramic vignettes depicting battle scenes as well as military vehicles and weaponry. In addition, he liked building model aircraft.

Survivors include daughters Sandra Dulemba (Edward) of Amherst and Debra Dietrich of Lorain as well as son Michael Mitcheff (Gladys) also of Lorain. In addition, George leaves eleven grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren, three great great grandchildren, and sisters Gloria and Carol Mitcheff both of Lorain and Sharon Berki (Joseph) of Elyria Township.

He was preceded in death by his wife Cora (nee Moore), parents George and Grace (nee Batalova) Mitcheff, and son-in-law James Dietrich.

Funeral Schedule

Private visitation for the family will  be Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of closing prayers at 11:30 a.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel – 3224 Broadway, Lorain. Face coverings will be required for all attendees and family members are asked to follow the Covid-19 guidelines displayed at the funeral chapel entrance and throughout the building. Burial will follow in Resthaven Memory Gardens in Avon where military honors will be conducted by Amvets Post # 32 of Elyria.
