Joseph T. Simulcik, Sr., age 95, of Amherst, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of Wednesday March 31, 2021. Born in New York, New York on July 21, 1925, Joe had been a resident of Ohio for more than seventy years.

He was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran who fulfilled duty assignments as a Radioman Third Class in the Pacific Theater. He was the recipient of the American Theater Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Medal with one Battle Star, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon, and the World War II Victory Medal.

Joe had been employed as an inspector at Ford Motor Company’s Lorain Assembly Plant; a long-time member of United Autoworker’s Local 425, Mr. Simulcik retired in 1989 following a career that spanned thirty-one years with the automaker.

A parishioner of St Joseph Catholic Church in Amherst, Joe enjoyed watching football and was a devoted fan of NFL Hall of Fame quarterback Dan Marino. A member of the American Slovak Club, he also enjoyed recreational bowling when time permitted.

He is survived by sons Philip Simulcik, Sr. (Melva) and David Simulcik both of Lorain, John Simulcik (fiancée Kelly Harmon) of Amherst, and Paul Simulcik of South Amherst. He also leaves daughters Elaine Simulcik of Elyria and Angela Dodson (Ronald) of Camden, North Carolina along with twenty-two grandchildren, thirty-three great grandchildren, and eleven great great grandchildren.

Joe was preceded in death by his wife Mary (nee Lawyer), sons Joseph Simulcik, Jr. and Thomas Simulcik, daughters Kathleen Pulin, and Iona Benoit, grandson Philip Simulcik, Jr., father  Joseph J. Simulcik, mother Anna Simulcik (nee Olexa),  and sisters Helen Wozarik and Irene Moorman.

Funeral Schedule

Visitation will be Monday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of his funeral services at 11:00 a.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel – 3224 Broadway Avenue, Lorain. (Visitors will be required to wear facial coverings and all guests will be asked to follow the COVID-19 guidelines posted at the funeral chapel entrance and throughout the building.)  Reverend Timothy O’Connor, pastor of St. Joseph Catholic Church will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery where military honors will be conducted by Amvets Post # 32 of Elyria.
