Charles L. “Pops” Schaffer, Sr., age 70, of Lorain, passed away in the intensive care unit of Mercy Health Hospital on the afternoon of Wednesday October 20, 2021 after losing his battle with the Covid virus. Mr. Schaffer was born in Lorain on November 27, 1950 and had been a life-long resident of Lorain County.

A veteran of the United States Army, he fulfilled duty assignments as a Specialist 4 attached to the 239th Aviation Company, Eighth Army in South Korea serving as a helicopter mechanic and repairman. He was awarded an Expert Badge for both the M-14 and M-16 rifles and was also the recipient of the National Defense Service Medal.

Upon his return from military service, Pops worked as a rigger at the American Ship Building Company and, later, as a hand molder for the Arrow Aluminum Company. Most recently he had been employed as a machinist for the Whirlaway Corporation in Wellington retiring on January 25, 2019 following a career that spanned fourteen years with the manufacturer.

He was a self-professed homebody who enjoyed vegetable gardening and maintaining his yard in his free time. Undoubtedly, his greatest enjoyment came from spending time with his family and, most especially, his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of forty-nine years Sharon “Diane” (nee Thomas), along with sons Charles L Schaffer, Jr. (Melisa) of Lorain and Matthew Schaffer (Nancy) of Highland Heights, and daughter Stacie Cunningham (Dwayne) of Elyria. He also leaves grandchildren Paige Peal (Andrew) Madison Schaffer, Dante Schaffer, Dominic Schaffer, and DaLana Cunningham, as well as great grandson Parker Peal. Additional survivors include siblings Richard Schaffer (Cindy), Leland Schaffer (Debbie), Lonnie Schaffer (Michelle), Kathy Beddingfield (Robert), Shirley Schaffer, Brenda Schaffer, and Linda Orr (Butch).

He was preceded in death by his parents Leonard F. Schaffer and Clara I. Schaffer (nee Wilbur), brothers James Leroy Schaffer, Leonard Franklin Schaffer, and sisters Mary Lee Royster, and Lorelei Schaffer.

A celebration of life will be observed on Sunday October 31st from Noon until 4:00 p.m. in the Lorain Elks Club (203 West 6th Street in Lorain with lot parking on 7th Street) for friends and family.
