Primo Ortiz, 83, of Lorain, passed away on Sunday August 15, 2021at Avon Oaks Nursing Home due to a lengthy illness.



He was born June 9, 1938 in Jayuya, Puerto Rico, came to Lorain in 1955 and was a 1957 graduate of Lorain High School.



Primo was a man of many accomplishments.  In his youth, he took to boxing as an open division fighter for the Lorain Youth Center.  His passion for the sport led him to open Ortiz A.C. Boxing Gym which he owned, managed and trained.  He was devoted to his fighters.  His legacy and training was that of strength, confidence, faith and discipline in and out of the boxing ring.



His working career began at US Steel.  He briefly owned an exterminating business.  He was assistant manager of Commonwealth Terminal Company of Pittsburgh, PA becoming marketing supervisor in Lorain County.  Primo became self-employed by opening Ortiz Grocery.  During the 1970’s, he was president of the Spanish-American Businessmen Association.  Among his many skills was his talented flare for cooking authentic Puerto Rican cuisine eventually opening his restaurant Primo’s Kitchen.  He became a well-known friend to many.  He was a caring, giving, hard-working man who helped and fed many in need.  He will always be remembered as a pillar in the South Lorain community.  



Primo enjoyed Spanish music favoring Boleros, Spanish guitar Trio’s, and dancing with his wife Gloria being the romantic he was.  He played softball for El Caribe Bar.  He enjoyed watching the Cleveland Indians, boxing, westerns, James Bond movies, his favorite comedian Rodney Dangerfield and spending time with family and friends.  He was a member of Sacred Heart Chapel, the Cursillo Movement and the Legion of Mary as he was devoted to the Holy Rosary daily.  



He is survived by his children: Guy Ortiz of Miami, FL, Ina (Dave) Funk of Key Largo, FL, Amy (Donnie) Renfroe of Barnesville, GA, Primo Ortiz, Jr, Vier (Lori) Ortiz, Enar (Jennifer) Ortiz & Evelisse Ortiz, all of Lorain; 12 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; siblings: Dolores “Lola” Marrero of Lawrenceville, GA, Jesus “Jesse” Gonzalez Ortiz of Knox, IN and Angel Ortiz of Oberlin and many family from New Jersey, New York City and Jayuya, Puerto Rico.  He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years Gloria Ortiz (nee Muniz) on June 26, 2021, parents Jesus & Emilia Ortiz (nee Gonzalez), sisters: Dominga “Sila” Ayala Ortiz and Angela Ortiz Mendez and cousin Angel Luis Ortiz.
